Garbage Disposal Seen in a Bad Light on NBC’s Heroes
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Drama, Prime Time, NBC, Internet, News,
When product placement goes wrong. That’s the issue that garbage disposal maker In-Sink-Erator has with NBC. In-Sink-Erator claims that an episode of Heroes did an injustice to their product. More specifically, in the pilot, the high school cheerleader (played by Hayden Panettiere) puts her hand into said In-Sink-Erator to mangle her fingers. While she has the ability to heal immediately following an injury, the disposal makers claims that the scene “casts the disposer in an unsavory light, irreparably tarnishing the product.” The scene showed a serious injury that resulted from someone putting their hand in the garbage disposal. The company also cried foul about the use of the In-Sink-Erator name, saying “It’s a trademark thing.” No comment yet from NBC, but the garbage disposal company is asking that any future broadcasts of that episode be barred. Currently, it can be seen on NBC’s website.

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Music, Prime Time, Cable, Cable/Satellite,
If you’re a fan of Nick Cannon’s MTV improv show Nick Cannon Presents Wild N’ Out, be on the lookout for the next Cannon endeavor: Nick Cannon Presents: Short Circuitz. Circuitz has been green-lit for eight episodes on MTV, beginning in early 2007 in the “10 Spot.” The show is a sketch comedy format, a la Saturday Night Live, featuring Cannon (who also created the series and exec produces). Joining him are Affion Crockett, Eliza Coupe, Leonard Robinson, Taran Killam and Katt Williams. His Wild N’Out series is currently in its third season. MTV signed Cannon for a production deal during the summer—Cannon remarked, “It is an honor that MTV and its executives have given me another opportunity to express my creativity.” If you haven’t seen his MTV show, you may have seen him in the 2002 film Drumline or heard him in the animated film Monster House.

The Week Ahead in TV
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Drama, Prime Time, Reality, ABC, FOX, NBC, The CW, Lost, The Bachelor,
MONDAY
The Bachelor (9pm on ABC): Are you seriously telling me that an Italian prince needs to find love on a reality show? Flavor Flav must make it look appealing.
TUESDAY
Friday Night Lights (8pm on NBC): Men everywhere will welcome programming that counters Dancing with the Stars and Gilmore Girls.
Veronica Mars (9pm on CW): Strangely enough, I haven’t yet watched the show that takes my name. But it shouldn’t surprise me that people think it’s so good.
WEDNESDAY
Lost (9pm on ABC): I’m gonna make a prediction and say Walt’s never coming back. Otherwise, the producers will eventually have to explain why he’s gained more weight than Hurley.
The Nine (10pm on ABC): First a plane crash mystery, now a secret amongst hostages. I’m not sure I can take all this uncertainty on the hump day.
FRIDAY
Trading Spouses (9pm on Fox): If the Bachelor saw this show, he might rethink the whole American wife thing.

Give that man a series—any series! Robert Smigel, the talented man behind Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, the Saturday Night Live TV Fun House segments, as well as writer for Late Night with Conan O’Brien has had an animated pilot green-lit by the Fox Network. Animals will provide another animated half-hour to Fox’s Sunday-night cartoon offerings (King of the Hill, The Simpsons, American Dad and Family Guy). According to trade papers, Animals will “mine the animal kingdom for a parody of life in suburban America.” The series is produced by Adam Sandler’s company, Happy Madison. Smigel and Sandler have a past with Saturday Night Live, plus Smigel has popped up in small appearances in Happy Gilmore and Punch-Drunk Love.

Amazing Race Renewed for Another Season
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, CBS, Amazing Race, The, Renewals,
CBS has renewed The Amazing Race for an 11th go-around. And why not? The show has won four Best Reality Competition Emmy awards and deserves even more awards (with the exception of that crummy family edition). The show is produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, with the amazingly fun Phil Keoghan serving as host. The show has hit some amazing locales and featured a lot of memorable team members since it all began in 2001. The ratings continue to be good for this reality show too—the premiere on September 17th drew more than 10.1 million people. The premise never gets stale, sending contestants around the world in search of clues as they compete in a variety of strength, endurance, intellectual and gross-out challenges. The option of two choices per road block and the ability to yield other teams or fast forward are all exciting elements of the game. Contestants keep their eyes on the $1 million grand prize—testing their teamwork along the way.

David Spade Gets Another Season of ‘Showbiz Show’
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Talk Shows, Cable, Cable/Satellite, Renewals,
The Showbiz Show With David Spade has been given the go-ahead by Comedy Central for a third season. Spade’s look at entertainment news is always a good bet for a few laughs. There are always some duds, but overall Spade pulls out some good snarky stuff. Comedy Central will air 13 new episodes of the half-hour show, beginning in February. Given the entertainment news format, you would think this type of show would not so much have “13 episode seasons,” but continue to be an on-going show. I mean, entertainment news is happening every day, why limit this type of show to just 13 episodes? Spade commented, saying “I want to get back on the air as quickly as possible so that we don’t miss out. There is too much good stuff going on right now in Hollywood. We have to catch up.”
In other Spade news, he will be appearing in the mid-season replacement comedy Rules of Engagement. The comedy will look at an engaged couple, a married couple, and a single guy, with Spade playing the engaged man’s best friend.

Charlie Sheen Earns the Big Bucks
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Prime Time, CBS,
Wow, this news came as a surprise to me—Charlie Sheen is about to become the highest paid comedy star on TV. Does that surprise you too? Maybe most surprising because I don’t like Two and a Half Men, but I’m probably in the minority there. I don’t find anything exceptionally funny about the show, nor do I find anything exceptional about Charlie Sheen. Perhaps I’m still holding a grudge about him replacing Michael J. Fox on Spin City. Anyhoo, Sheen is in negotiations with Warner Bros. TV right now to to earn about $350,000 per episode this season. This makes him a high roller among sitcom stars on the tube now, although it’s just a drop in the bucket to the $2 mil per episode that Ray Ramano received. Two and a Half Men is apparently no slouch—averaging more than 15 million viewers and “making it TV’s most watched straight-forward comedy.” I also didn’t realize that Sheen has been nominated for an Emmy, two Golden Globes, and a Screen Actors Guild award. He must be doing something right… but he’s not getting any laughs out of me.

Singer Jewel to Co-Host Nashville Star
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Music, Reality, Cable, Cable/Satellite,
The fifth season of USA’s Nashville Star will begin on January 11th, with Jewel taking on co-hosting duties. Nashville Star is the country-fied version of American Idol, searching for the next best country singer. Cowboy Troy returns as co-host, and I have to honestly say that I have no idea who that even is. At least they have a big name like Jewel to bring in more viewers. Jewel is rising to the co-hosting challenge, saying “I grew up on a ranch in Alaska, and my favorite memories are of sitting around a campfire with my father and listening to the songs he wrote and sang. It was pure country music, and it has made me a sincere fan of country music ever since.” At least she’s reminiscing about growing up in Alaska, and not about living in a van (as the tale goes, that’s how she spent the early days of her career). Her latest album, “Goodbye Alice in Wonderland” came out in May. The winner of Nashville Star will get a recording contract.

Anna Nicole Smith’s son, Daniel Smith, died unexpectedly on September 10th—just three days after Anna Nicole gave birth to a baby girl. The cause of death was under investigation, and finally the culprit has been identified as methadone. Toxicology tests revealed that the combination of methadone and antidepressants led to Daniel’s death. The toxicology screening was the second attempt at identifying the cause, this time with a privately hired pathologist. The combination of drugs sped up Smith’s heart, leading to his death. The pathologist did not believe his death was a suicide, rather “a tragic, accidental drug-related death.” Methadone is often prescribed as a painkiller, but is also commonly used to help heroin addicts fight their addiction.
In other Anna Nicole news, her attorney, Howard K. Stern, is claiming to be her newborn’s father. This admission came during his interview with CNN’s Larry King Tuesday night.

Dustin Diamond (a.k.a. “Screech”) Sex Tape Discovered
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Syndication, News, Rumors,
File this under ewww… former Saved by the Bell dweeb, Screech, has a new video. And it ain’t pretty. Dustin Diamond, who played the pint size goofy kid on the ‘80s series, was in a sex tape featuring Diamond in a threesome with two women. David Hans Schmidt, an entertainment agent, has acquired the rights to the video, saying “Just when you think you have seen everything in this business, mankind has raised the bar another notch. Or lowered it.” The video, tentatively titled (I can’t believe I’m typing this) “Saved by the Smell,” is being shopped around to adult video distributors. Diamond’s manager, Roger Paul, commented that he hadn’t seen the tape, but he had “heard rumors… Dustin has been trying to escape the Screech typecast. So this may help me get more bookings.” Not sure what kind of “bookings” this will lead to, but I suppose it keeps Diamond in the public eye just a little bit longer. Diamond recently popped back into the news when he was going to lose his home and sold t-shirts to raise funds. He is also scheduled to appear on the ABC sitcom The Knights of Prosperity.
